OVO Energy Women’s Tour 2018 Stage 5 Preview

So, this is it. The OVO Energy Women’s Tour draws to a close with the overall title in the balance. Coryn Rivera and her Sunweb squad have kept things under control since stage 2, but this final stage is supposedly the hardest the race has seen.

New territory, a new country, and a lot of climbing. Can Rivera hang on, or will the phalanx of riders within touching distance kick her out of the green jersey?

The route

For the first time, the Women’s Tour has a stage in Wales. Things stat in Dolgellau, heading for the coast before turning inland to skirt the western side of Snowdonia National Park. The first-category Bwlch-y-Maen comes after 44 kilometers, with Wiggle-High5’s Elisa Longo Borghini needing just one point to seal the Queen of the Mountains classification.

The final big climb of the race, the first-category Nant Gwynant, comes at 70 kilometers; at an average of 4.4% it’s not the steepest, and it climbs to just under 300 meters, but its long, dragging nature means that if teams like Waowdeals, Boels-Dolmans and Wiggle-High5 decide to race it flat out, the race will splinter, with struggling riders having little hope of getting back on before the finish.

The race finishes with a trawl through Gwydir Forest Park, ruling north to the finish in the seaside resort of Colwyn Bay.
