Crescent Vårgårda TTT: Who’ll Come Second?

It’s pretty facetious to write a headline like that, but when Boels-Dolmans have been so strong in team tests in recent times, it’s almost impossible to see them losing out in Sweden’s first of two World Tour events this weekend.

They are the defending champions for Vårgårda, won the Worlds TTT in 2016, and have taken the time trials in the Healthy Aging Tour and the Giro Rosa already this year. And that is after seeing Ellen Van Dijk move to Sunweb and Evelyn Stevens retiring.

The course is more or less flat, gently rolling according to the official profile, but with what looks like the only serious bump coming about 5 kilometres from the end. Not too massively technical, and perfect for a strong team of roulers.

Who can come close? Maybe Cervélo-Bigla will spring a surprise, and they were only 37” back last year. The consistency and improvement from Thomas Campana’s team has been notable this year, and they possess strong riders against the clock.

Sunweb (as Liv-Plantur) were a whole three minutes behind in ninth last year, but the arrival of Ellen Van Dijk should catapult them up the standings, and the Dutch powerhouse is on strong form with a second consecutive European TT title won last weekend.

As ever, Canyon-SRAM should have a good ride, and it might be worth keeping an eye on the Danish VelóCONCEPT squad with Linda Villumsen in their ranks.

But, at 42.5 kilometres, it would be foolish to expect Boels-Dolmans to lose out.
