The 2017 Giro Rosa comes to an end with a 124-kilometer stage that starts and finishes in Torre del Greco, one of Campania’s biggest towns.
Today is classified as a flat stage, but the roads are definitely not flat. There’s little respite, as there are so many little twists, turns and rollers all day.
We have nine laps of an initial circuit by the seaside, with a TV sprint just after half-distance. Then there’s a final lap of a different circuit which runs into the Mount Vesuvius national park and takes in the foothills of the iconic volcano. We have the stage’s only classified climb, the last of this Giro, which tops out just shy of 400 meters. The Ercolano Monumento Vesuvio comes with just 10 kilometers left, and then we have a super-fast descent to the seafront finish.
This climb shouldn’t be enough to see off the sprinters, but after ten consecutive days of racing, there will be so many tired bodies that it might be hard to keep control of any sniping attacks. So far, any stages that have looked like sprint stages have been won from bunch sprints by the fastest riders (Barnes, d’Hoore, Lepisto, Bastianelli) so there’s no reason to suspect that their teams can’t keep things together one last time.
Anna Van Der Breggen has shown that she has the strongest team in the race, so Boels-Dolmans know that one final effort will bring home the pink jersey. We’ll just have to see if anyone else has the collective strength and will to bring the fight to them.
