Giro Rosa 2017 – Stage 3 Review

It did come down to a sprint in the end, and the fastest of the fast women on stage 3 was Canyon-SRAM’s Hannah Barnes. The English rider scorched home ahead of Kirsten Wild from Cylance and CervΓ©lo-Bigla’s Lotta LepistΓΆ.

Stage 3 review

It was a super-fast day, over 40 kilometers per hour, and the high speed kept the peloton together early with no attacks sticking, the riders whizzing through vineyards before the rain arrived.

At 60 kilometers, the riders faced a real wall, the Muro Ca’ del Poggio, which stretched things out. Annemiek Van Vleuten took the points at the top and towed eight of the big names away. Ryan and Cecchini (Canyon-SRAM) chased them down on the sweeping descent, with the triple Italian champion immediately countering and going solo.

Cecchini got around half a minute, but was swept up with 20 kilometers to go, and although Clemi Fernandes (Servetto Giusta) tried, she had no answer once AlΓ© Cipollini put the hammer down.

Barnes was part of a hugely impressive Canyon-SRAM lead-out train for Barbara Guarischi, and got the shout from her team-mate to launch her own sprint.

No major change overall, with the main jerseys staying with their current owners although, sadly, CervΓ©lo-Bigla’s Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio had to abandon through illness.
