OVO Energy Women’s Tour Stage 4 Preview

It was on these roads last year, for stage three, that Lizzie Armitstead took control of the race winning a small-group sprint from Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, Elisa Longo Borghini and Amanda Spratt.

The Chesterfield loop this year is slightly shorter than the three preceding stages, at 123 kilometers, partly to let the teams get themselves together for the transfer down to London for the last stage. We go anti-clockwise, with second-category climbs (Middleton Top and Crich) and sprints (Belper and Staveley) alternating.

Like the other stages so far, this just adds to the leg-sapping climbing, with the road never offering a moment’s respite. There is a whopping 2020 meters of ascent in what should be around three hours of racing, giving just under 7200 meters ascent in the four stages so far.

The final kilometers are largely downhill, offering a breakaway the chance of hanging on to an advantage.

If there is any doubt about who will win the OVO Energy Women’s Tour overall this year, this is stage is the last chance for teams to make a difference. The profile offers plenty springboards, but it will need a well-motivated team with enough energy left to devote to the cause.
